New Top-Level Domains
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced it’s timeline for the accepting of new top-level domains. We are all used to the regular top level domains such as (.com, .org, .net, and so forth) but, ICANN will soon receive applications from public businesses and private enterprises to buy their own. That means that domains such as .music, .news , or even .sony or .ipad are going to be available for purchase.
This is going to be one of the biggest developments in the internet and domain registration since the first domain was registered in 1985 (Symbolics.com). With all the great positives such as branding and categorizing, such as a top-level domain only for artists (ex: Picasso.art) it will also bring much controversy and negotiation. Who will own the rights to .music or .love? These are going to be some of the long debates ahead with answers only ICANN can decide. Did I mention the application to apply for a Top-Level Domain is $185,000? Sorry to burst your bubble on thoughts for your very own.
